Service for the Mirage 2000 began in 1984, and the last production aircraft was procured by the Hellenic Air Force in 2007. The Mirage 2000-5F was intended to be an export version, but the French Air Force did not receive enough interest to make it feasible, so existing aircraft were modified. In 1993, it was agreed to update the present aircraft, and work began in 1997, with its first delivery of 2000-5F in 2000. The French Air Force frequently participates in the multi-national air defense drill (NOMAD) inspired by the Belgian Air Force, an annual event at RAF Waddington. The first NOMAD exercise occurred in 1994, in which European Air Forces and non-European Air Forces with squadrons based in Europe participated.
